There’s something magical about a wedding, no matter the size, but I have a particular soft spot for the smaller, more intimate ceremonies. As a wedding celebrant, I’ve had the honour of officiating weddings that range from grand, lavish affairs with hundreds of guests to those quiet, cosy ceremonies with only 30-70 guests present. While all weddings have their beauty, it’s the smaller, intimate ones that resonate most deeply with me.

The Magic of Intimate Ceremonies

In a world where big events often steal the spotlight, there’s an undeniable charm to a smaller gathering. The atmosphere at a more intimate wedding is entirely different. It’s just so personal, heartfelt, and often feels less rushed. The couple are able to truly savour each moment, share meaningful exchanges with their guests, and be present with each other in a way that’s often harder to do with larger weddings.

One of the things I love most about officiating smaller ceremonies is that I get to be a part of something deeply personal and unique. There’s a closeness, not only between the couple and their guests but also between the couple and me as their celebrant. I don’t just feel like the person standing in front of them during the vows. I become part of the experience, sharing in their emotions and stories.

Why Small Weddings Allow for More Connection

At a large wedding, the focus can sometimes become largely about logistics. There are so many people, so many moving parts, and so many details to keep track of. While these weddings can be grand and beautiful, they don’t always allow for the same level of intimacy between the couple and their guests. It’s easy for a couple to feel like they’re being pulled in a hundred different directions, trying to say hello to everyone, keep to a schedule, and meet all the expectations of the day.

At a smaller wedding, the pressure to perform and entertain is greatly diminished. There’s more room for genuine moments, heartfelt conversations, and a deep connection between the couple and their closest loved ones. This relaxed atmosphere creates a space where everyone can be fully present, soaking in the love, joy, and emotions of the day. It’s not just a celebration, but a shared experience between the couple and their guests, and that makes it all the more special for me as a celebrant.

Creating Personalised Ceremonies: A Deep Dive into the Couple’s Story

One of the reasons I love officiating intimate weddings is the opportunity to make each ceremony truly unique to the couple. When the guest list is smaller, there’s more room for personalisation in every aspect of the ceremony. I make it a point to meet with the couple beforehand, getting to know their individual love story, what makes them tick, and how they envision their wedding day. I believe every couple has a story that deserves to be told in a way that honours who they are and how they’ve come together.

From the way they met, to their favourite shared memories, to the values they hold dear, I weave these elements into the ceremony, making sure that it reflects not just their love, but their personalities too. Whether it’s sharing a funny anecdote about their first date or incorporating meaningful quotes or traditions from their backgrounds, I aim to craft a ceremony that feels deeply personal and tailored to them.

No two couples are alike, and no two weddings should be either. That’s why I take time to listen carefully during the planning process, ensuring that every detail of the ceremony speaks to who they are, both as individuals and as a couple. Some may want humour, others want something spiritual or romantic. It’s their vision and I work to bring it to life in the ceremony itself.

Incorporating Unique Traditions and Rituals

In smaller ceremonies, there’s often more freedom to include personalised rituals or traditions that might not fit into the structure of a larger wedding. I’ve officiated ceremonies where couples have written their own vows, exchanged meaningful objects instead of rings, or included cultural or spiritual elements that are important to them. Some couples love the idea of a unity candle, handfasting, or sand ceremonies, while others create new rituals that are uniquely theirs.

This is where my creativity really comes into play. I love helping couples explore different ideas and rituals that can enhance their ceremony and make it their own. Inviting family members to share readings, intimate weddings allow for those extra touches.

Embracing the Beauty of Simplicity

There’s a certain elegance to smaller weddings as well. Without the fanfare and production that often accompanies larger weddings, the focus remains on what truly matters: the couple, their love, and the commitment they’re making to one another. The simplicity of these ceremonies is their greatest strength. Every word spoken, every glance exchanged between the couple, and every laugh shared with their guests feels richer and more meaningful.

In smaller settings, I can engage more closely with the couple and the guests, fostering a sense of connection that is hard to replicate in a larger, more formal ceremony. When there’s a handful of people gathered, it feels like a community coming together to witness something special, not just an event, but an intimate milestone in the couple’s lives. The emotions are often heightened, and the love in the room is gleamingly obvious.

Why It Matters to Me

Ultimately, I love officiating intimate weddings because they allow me to contribute to one of the most meaningful days in a couple’s lives in a way that feels deeply personal. I don’t just stand at the front of the room. I become part of the couple’s story, and I take that responsibility to heart.

Every wedding I officiate leaves a mark on me, but the smaller, more intimate ones hold a special place in my heart. They are a reminder of the power of love, of connection, and of the beauty that exists when two people choose to share their lives with one another. And for me, there is no greater honour than helping to create a ceremony that reflects the unique love and journey of each couple.
